Love

I have learnt that there are two different attitudes towards love; I have selected four poems that consider this issue and show the poets true thoughts on love. Two of my texts, ‘Leaving Prince Charming Behind,' written by Karol Mila and ‘Advice to a discarded Lover,' written by Fleer Dock, both look at the theme of love and past relationships in a negative and quite a depressing manner. Whereas, the other two texts deal with both the poets sweet, happy and more realistic attitude towards the power of true love. ‘To the girl who stood beside me at the checkout counter ofWhitewalls in Hamilton on Tuesday,' written by Glenn Colophon and ‘This is love,' written by Karol Mila both deal with the positive aspects of love and the Journey of love and what it meaner to them. The two texts ‘Leaving Prince Charming Behind,' written by Karol Mila and ‘Advice to a discarded Lover,' written by Fleer Dock. Look at the theme of love through two similar ways. The c onnection between the texts is the poets stating their sad and negative outlook on love, certain techniques such as metaphors help to demonstrate and illustrate the visual image of both poets' similar negative perceptions of love and relationships. In the poem, ‘Leaving Prince Charming Behind' relating to fairy tales clarified that she did not want to be a ‘princess' anymore. By using a metaphor the poem constantly referred to the fairy tale characters. The technique was effective in showing the connection between the two texts, as the fairy tale characters provide stereotypes and presumed knowledge. So we assume what is going to happen. However Mila proves our assumption wrong by showing the paradoxical side of each event or character. As a reader we know Repulse as a princess in a tower. Mila modifies this image by describing her long hair as ‘shorn. ‘The architect of isolation' elates to Repulse feeling helpless. She has used this to show that she wanted to escape from him and that she did not love him anymore. The metaphor helps to show the reader, the poet's negative outlook and idea of what love is, which is not fairy tale is, she describes it to be the complete opposite. This then connects with my second text, ‘Advice to a discarded lover,' written by Fleer Dock, as she also uses techniques such as metaphors in her poem to illustrate her negative idea of what love is due to a past relationship.Like the technique discussed previously, metaphors give us a clear image of what love is through the poet's respective. The verbs that were significant in enhancing the metaphor, that she used to describe the relationship, Wriggling, munching,' ‘crawling and ‘creeping,' all relate to someone's initial reaction on finding a particularly gross bug. His fat, moist warm-skin' makes him sound revolting, at this stage; she can only be revolted by his actions as she would an insect. The verbs enhance the metaphor as it helps you to see the poet is literally stating that her ex-partner is a disgusting maggoty dead bird. This is evident when she says, ‘In you I see maggots close to the surface' so it is clear hat she finds him quite unbearable. Therefore this extended metaphor is a sub- connection symbolisms and illustrates the author thoughts on love which therefore This is the same in the texts, ‘This is love' written by Karol Mila and ‘To the girl who stood beside me at Whitewalls bookstore in Hamilton on Tuesday,' written by Glenn Calhoun. The poets also express their perception of love, through a positive, happy and more realistic point of view; as they are more general not Just focusing on a past relationship, these poets are not referring to fairy tale illusions, We were living he fairy tale,' or describing their past relationships to be a dead maggoty worthless bird, ‘a dead bird, not only dead, not only fallen, but full of maggots,' they are saying what love generally meaner to t hem, and they have logic behind this belief therefore their viewpoint seems to be more realistic.Together the poets have shown that love is a process with several different stages, these stages will not be completed if the relationship is not cared for and nurtured, to create a happy and healthy relationship which is clearly shown in the texts. Therefore I believe this shows the realism of each ext compared to the last two, also showing their connection. In the poem ‘This is love,' written by Karol Mila, she uses gardening to relate to love, and relationships between lovers; Mila introduces a metaphor by calling her thoughts, the roots' which have been nurtured and educated over the years to reach her understanding of love. The image is developed as she watches ‘big hands brown custodial' place a new plant into the bucket. The tending process of the thoughts and the new seeds are described in detail. ‘Love is the pruning and the watering in the seventh stanza shows that Mila realizes that love is like a plant that needs to be rated tenderly, pruned back and watered regularly to maintain the relationship, this also supports the idea of showing that the poet believes that love is a Journey, and there are many stages in a relationship, but to have a strong healthy and long relationship, it needs to be nurtured and cared for.So this shows Mila expressing her perception of what she thinks love is, in this case her outlook to me seems to be quite bright, realistic and peaceful. This then connects with my last text, ‘To the girl who stood beside me at the checkout counter at Whitewalls in Hamilton on Tuesday,' written by Glenn Colophon. Again the poet writes his true thought on what he believes love is which also seems to be quite loving and sweet. This is evident when the poet goes through all the things of what he believes true love is centered around, for example We kissed,' We married,' We built a house beside a lake,' and We grew fat and ha ppy together. ‘ All of these are happy things that symbolism what the poet's initial thoughts and ideas of what he personally believes love is. They also show that this poet believes that love and being in a relationship has several stages, which get more and more significant the longer oh stay with one person, and takes time to get to where you may want to be in a relationship.I believe this is a very logical and positive viewpoint on love, once again showing the connections with the previous text. I think that the idea of love can be portrayed in a number of ways depending on past experiences, which may alter your thoughts and your definition of what love meaner to not Just poetry, was always popular but is becoming more and more popular in today's society, as on a day to day basis we are surrounded by stereotypes of what love is ‘supposed' to be like. LOVE Makes Perfect In the essay † Expertise Dissected,† Daniel J. Levities believes that barely anyone can become an expert in their area without continuous practice. Moreover, he mentions that although talent is a major factor that people acquire skills more rapidly than others, with only talent, one cannot achieve success in that area. Finally, Levities emphasizes that practice is the most essential factor leading to a significant achievement. From my point of view, I totally agree with Levities' opinions. Based on y life experience and the book I read, I think his points are totally correct. All in all, practice is the most important foundation for success. People need to practice if they want to achieve the dream they have wished. Taking Vivian, who took same COCCIDS class with me, as an example, she is a student majoring in philosophy. And she is extremely smart and always has many unique thoughts. However, we shared the same situation where we both failed COCCIDS for five times. Last quarter, I noticed that there was a change happening in her. From my observation, she started to ask he professor for extra prompts every time after each class. Before, she was always hanging out with her friends and paid little attention to this writing class. Now, she realized that she could not afford another failure in COCCIDS , otherwise she would be kicked out from SCUDS. So she decided to practice more, which actually led to a reward. At the end of that quarter, she finally passed the exit exam. However, I failed again since I did not study hard enough. The contradiction from Vivian and me shows that Levity's points are totally correct that people can not get a significant achievement without practice.Levities mentions that even one is equipped with brilliant talent, he also has to practice since † practice makes perfect,† which I think is totally right. Michael Jordan, the best basketball player ever, won NAB championships for six times. He is a world -class basketball star, who promotes NAB and basketball to every corner of all over the world. When he was a high school student, his amazing basketball talent started to blossom. Even though he had brilliant talent, he still trained more than ten hours a day. The fact that the Chicago Bulls selected him did not stop him from practicing. He is always the one who first arrived in gym and the last one left the gym. After day and day training, he was able to help the team win championship for six times and win himself the most valued player for five times. Just as authors mentioned, talent is a gift from God, however practice makes this gift being discovered more deeply. There are many evidence showing that people are easily to fail if they stop practice, no matter how talented they are. For example, doodads, with the developing of the entertainments, more and more fantastic game was welcomed by adults. The defend of Ancients, one of popular games, becomes the best game, and it already h ad more than ten millions players all over the world. Dad, one of top players in China, is good at playing this game. At first, he helped the team win the champion of the Electronic Sports World Cup. With his past teammates still fighting for their game life, he had to retire since he was so complacent that he ignored the importance of practice. Also, there were lots of negative reports about his fife after that winning and according to these reports, he smoked weed and drank almost everyday. From this example, we could easily tell that talent only plays an important role in the very beginning of ones success, and what led to ones ultimate achievement is practice. Both Levities and I believe in the importance of practice. We also hold the same idea that it is more essential than talent in the long run. A man born with talents only means he is lucky and can acquire a specific skill more quickly than others. However, practice is what really makes him achieve further success in his fiel d. Property, Plant And Equipment Essay

Items of property, plant, and equipment should be recognised as assets when it is probable that: [IAS 16.7] it is probable that the future economic benefits associated with the asset will flow to the entity, and the cost of the asset can be measured reliably. This recognition principle is applied to all property, plant, and equipment costs at the time they are incurred. These costs include costs incurred initially to acquire or construct an item of property, plant and equipment and costs incurred subsequently to add to, replace part of, or service it. IAS 16 does not prescribe the unit of measure for recognition – what constitutes an item of property, plant, and equipment. [IAS 16.9] Note, however, that if the cost model is used (see below) each part of an item of property, plant, and equipment with a cost that is significant in relation to the total cost of the item must be depreciated separately. [IAS 16.43] IAS 16 recognises that parts of some items of property, plant, and equipment may require replacement at regular intervals. The carrying amount of an item of property, plant, and equipment will include the cost of replacing the  part of such an item when that cost is incurred if the recognition criteria (future benefits and measurement reliability) are met. The carrying amount of those parts that are replaced is derecognised in accordance with the derecognition provisions of IAS 16.67-72. [IAS 16.13] Also, continued operation of an item of property, plant, and equipment (for example, an aircraft) may require regular major inspections for faults regardless of whether parts of the item are replaced. When each major inspection is performed, its cost is recognised in the carrying amount of the item of property, plant, and equipment as a replacement if the recognition criteria are satisfied. If necessary, the estimated cost of a future similar inspection may be used as an indication of what the cost of the existing inspection component was when the item was acquired or constructed. [IAS 16.14] Initial Measurement An item of property, plant and equipment should initially be recorded at cost. [IAS 16.15] Cost includes all costs necessary to bring the asset to working condition for its intended use. This would include not only its original purchase price but also costs of site preparation, delivery and handling, installation, related professional fees for architects and engineers, and the estimated cost of dismantling and removing the asset and restoring the site (see IAS 37, Provisions, Contingent Liabilities and Contingent Assets). [IAS 16.16-17] If payment for an item of property, plant, and equipment is deferred, interest at a market rate must be recognised or imputed. [IAS 16.23] If an asset is acquired in exchange for another asset (whether similar or dissimilar in nature), the cost will be measured at the fair value unless (a) the exchange transaction lacks commercial substance or (b) the fair value of neither the asset received nor the asset given up is reliably measurable. If the acquired item is not measured at fair value, its cost is measured at the carrying amount of the asset given up. [IAS 16.24] Measurement Subsequent to Initial Recognition IAS 16 permits two accounting models: Cost Model. The asset is carried at cost less accumulated depreciation and impairment. [IAS 16.30] Revaluation Model. The asset is carried at a revalued amount, being its fair value at the date of revaluation less  subsequent depreciation and impairment, provided that fair value can be measured reliably. [IAS 16.31] The Revaluation Model Under the revaluation model, revaluations should be carried out regularly, so that the carrying amount of an asset does not differ materially from its fair value at the balance sheet date. [IAS 16.31] If an item is revalued, the entire class of assets to which that asset belongs should be revalued. [IAS 16.36] Revalued assets are depreciated in the same way as under the cost model (see below). If a revaluation results in an increase in value, it should be credited to other comprehensive income and accumulated in equity under the heading â€Å"revaluation surplus† unless it represents the reversal of a revaluation decrease of the same asset previously recognised as an expense, in which case it should be recognised as income. [IAS 16.39] A decrease arising as a result of a revaluation should be recognised as an expense to the extent that it exceeds any amount previously credited to the revaluation surplus relating to the same asset. [IAS 16.40] When a revalued asset is disposed of, any revaluation surplus may be transferred directly to retained earnings, or it may be left in equity under the heading revaluation surplus. The transfer to retained earnings should not be made through the income statement (that is, no â€Å"recycling† through profit or loss). [IAS 16.41] Depreciation (Cost and Revaluation Models) For all depreciable assets: The depreciable amount (cost less residual value) should be allocated on a systematic basis over the asset’s useful life [IAS 16.50]. The residual value and the useful life of an asset should be reviewed at least at each financial year-end and, if expectations differ from previous estimates, any change is accounted for prospectively as a change in estimate under IAS 8. [IAS 16.51] The depreciation method used should reflect the pattern in which the asset’s economic benefits are consumed by the entity [IAS 16.60]; The depreciation method should be reviewed at least annually and, if the pattern of consumption of benefits has changed, the depreciation method should be changed prospectively as a change in estimate under IAS 8. [IAS 16.61] Depreciation should be charged to the income statement, unless it is included in the carrying amount of another asset [IAS 16.48]. Depreciation  begins when the asset is available for use and continues until the asset is derecognised, even if it is idle. [IAS 16.55] Recoverability of the Carrying Amount IAS 36 requires impairment testing and, if necessary, recognition for property, plant, and equipment. An item of property, plant, or equipment shall not be carried at more than recoverable amount. Recoverable amount is the higher of an asset’s fair value less costs to sell and its value in use. Any claim for compensation from third parties for impairment is included in profit or loss when the claim becomes receivable. [IAS 16.65] Derecogniton (Retirements and Disposals) An asset should be removed from the balance sheet on disposal or when it is withdrawn from use and no future economic benefits are expected from its disposal. The gain or loss on disposal is the difference between the proceeds and the carrying amount and should be recognised in the income statement. [IAS 16.67-71] If an entity rents some assets and then ceases to rent them, the assets should be transferred to inventories at their carrying amounts as they become held for sale in the ordinary course of business. [IAS 16.68A] Disclosure For each class of property, plant, and equipment, disclose: [IAS 16.73] basis for measuring carrying amount   depreciation method(s) used useful lives or depreciation rates gross carrying amount and accumulated depreciation and impairment losses reconciliation of the carrying amount at the beginning and the end of the period, showing: additions disposals acquisitions through business combinations revaluation increases or decreases impairment losses reversals of impairment losses depreciation net foreign exchange differences on translation other movements Also disclose: [IAS 16.74] restrictions on title expenditures to construct property, plant, and equipment during the period contractual commitments to acquire property, plant, and equipment compensation from third parties for items of property, plant, and equipment that were impaired, lost or given up that is included in profit or loss If property, plant, and equipment is stated at revalued amounts, certain additional disclosures are required: [IAS 16.77] the effective date of the revaluation whether an independent valuer was involved the methods and significant assumptions used in estimating fair values the extent to which fair values were determined directly by reference to observable prices in an active market or recent market transactions on arm’s length terms or were estimated using other valuation techniques for each revalued class of property, the carrying amount that would have been recognised had the assets been carried under the cost model the revaluation surplus, including changes during the period and any restrictions on the distribution of the balance to shareholders

Research Project Information Security Management Paper

Project Information Security Management - Research Paper Example Basically, it is a small firm that produces products related to air conditioning, heating and refrigeration and is located in Sharpsburg, Pa. However, the details closed in an email were accessed and stolen as a result of this attack. In this scenario, attackers used malicious software to attack Fazio and this attack started almost two months prior to the attack that was launched against Target Corp. In fact, the attackers made use of these stolen information to steal card data from more than one thousand cash register. The investigation shows that the attackers made use of Citadel tool that is particularly used as a password-stealing bot application. In addition, this application is derived from ZeuS that is a well-known banking Trojan (KrebsonSecurity). In addition, the investigation showed that when the attackers entered into their network, the Target’s security team was able to determine only some of their actions. However, the security team carefully evaluated their actions and responded accordingly. Addition, in the light of their evaluations they identified that the action did not deserve instant follow up. Analyse the change process at the Lady Magazine from the period prior Essay

Analyse the change process at the Lady Magazine from the period prior to the appointment of Rachel Johnson as Editor to the pres - Essay Example SITUATION ANALYSIS In this advance and emerged era of globalization, The Lady Magazine was not enhancing its contents creatively that can hold the attention of the readers. It was continuously losing its market share for two decades and was standing on the dying market position with only a circulation of average 31,000 readerships with a segment of age group of 70 and above customers. The magazine never has changed its concept of designing the magazine and it had not made such innovative improvements that can lead them to the scale of prosperity. Ben is now the head of the five member’s board which is consists of five family members. Ben did not have a publishing experience but he deeply realized that the lady magazine desperately needed a new concept and image. He introduced some changes when he became the head of the board, that includes adventure travel trips, full-color advertising and to consternation of some of the more seasoned staff members-a website. Nature of the cha nge The nature of the change was reactive because it was forced by the customer market demand and with the dying market share of lady magazine so it was pressurized by continuous decrease in the market share of lady and the loss of readership. ... She aimed to double the readership of the lady magazine with her ideas and editing skills along with the concept of a real successful woman. The level of change that has occurred at the Lady Magazine can be referred as Gamma. When an organization makes a paradigm shift, then the level of change is referred as Gamma (Burnes, 2004; By, 2005). The idea and concept has been changed and redefined in order attract higher readers, therefore such a change is being referred as Gamma. Stakeholders viewpoint When these changes occurred, it also captured the attention and interest of the present stakeholders along with attracting new investors as well, because it was a new idea of increasing the market share and generating a handsome profit with a good pace of success. So it holds the investors interest with the perspective of generating more profits with it. The investors always are attracted with new concepts and ideas that can generate handsome amount of money in a short time period (Cameron, & Green, 2012). So the new investors who were attracted by this idea have realized that with this changed idea, the lady magazine will be able to generate a handsome amount of profit for them. Besides investors, the other stakeholders of the magazine are also important (Cummings, and Worley, 2009). Other stakeholders were also excited such as distributors, employees, readers, potential readers, society, competitors, managers and other stakeholders (Martin, 2006). Therefore these changes would influence each of the stakeholders as the company plans to redefine itself (Balogun, and Hailey, 1999). Threats of competitors is always important to analyse (Daft, and Marcic, 2006) and this threat would have increased as with this new idea, the sales and

Advertising and society Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Advertising and society - Research Paper Example This essay "Advertising and Society" describes the history of the ad and how the advertising industry works. Advertisement started among the ancient Babylonian Empire and from there the rest was history. â€Å"The first evidence of advertising was found among the ancient Babylonian Empire and dates back to the 3000s BC.† Therefore advertisement has systematically worked its way up the ladder of human consciousness and taken many years to attain the status it has today –that of a potentially influential medium (Hayko, 2010). Many psychologists and scholars believe that advertising has affected our society in shocking ways. For years they have studied the mental and emotional affects it can trigger in individuals and in turn the society at large. The ways in which advertising affects our society have been both negative and positive and have been fundamental to the advertising industry. The advertisement industry lives to sell itself. This is the main focal point of the entire hubbub in the media and the cashing of various products and ads. Without this primary and hunter-like objective, the advertisement industry would not be able to gain as much profit as it does now through deception and mockery. Through this instinct for survival and the ‘subliminally stimulated patterns the advertisement industry has adopted in order to ensnare more and more customers to buy their products. In order to understand the workings of advertising, we need to discuss the pros and cons of the advertisement industry in o rder to see how they mirror our society.

United States of America and sale of weapons Essay

United States of America and sale of weapons - Essay Example Many world leaders like the then Russia President Vladimir Puttin expressed their concerns that the US ideas of creating a uni-polar world was the main cause for increased arms race that seems to have reawakened since the era of the cold war. There have been other sentiments that the idea of US to arms its allies while it works hard to curtail their rights to develop defensive weapons is a world catastrophe that may explode to war at any time.In most of the time, the arms transfer by the US has ended up in fuelling conflicts in the region where the arms are exported. There have also been a lot of abuses of human rights by the regime which acquires the arms. The high level of tension that is caused by these transfer have always escalated to conflicts. For example the recent decision by the US to provide F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan which has been upheld with an aim of providing compatible military hardware to threat of rivals like Indian have lead to a lot of tension between the two n ations which is feared that it might soon escalate to conflicts. Rather than bring forces of stability in these regimes, US weapons sales has shown to serve as the source of power of conflicts, unstable and undemocratic regime which is detrimental to the US security in the world and the global security at large. There is already a big conflict between the two nations and India has expressed that the sell of F-16 jet to Pakistan is not meant to fight the Al-Qaeda as the US proposes but it is rather meant to fight India. It has been shown that the two countries have fought each other for more that 3 times and once one of the country acquired high tech weapons, the other will not feel safe and it is likely to acquire the same weapons in order to protect itself. Therefore the US may be creating a lucrative market for the jet since India is also likely to buy the same or other at a higher level (Deconde 2002, p. 534). The ABC of arms sales in the US There are two ways that have been used by the arms manufacturers in the US to sell their weapons to other nations. One of such way is the Foreign Military Sales which are government-to-government sales that are based on an agreement that has been negotiated by the two nations ostensibly involving the pentagon and the purchasing nation. The other one is the direct commercial sales which involves an agreement that it agreed between the manufacturing company and the country that wants to purchase the arms. This is then licensed the state department which gives the approval for the sale of the arms. (Gary 2003, p. 4) The US government in most cases can transfer from the stock of weapons that it is holding which can be for free or at a reduced price. This is usually implemented through the Excess Defense Articles (EDA). Allied government is also allowed to receive fast track grants of weapons in order to address crisis situation in their countries through the Emergency Drawdown Program. The above two departments are managed by the department of the Defense (Ohlson, 2006 p. 3). US is the top provide of weapons The US has consistently used the technologies that it has developed in its industries as the currency of friendly is not with the foreign nations where it has an interest to protect. It has been increasing its exports of deadly technology which helps to fuel conflicts in this nations rather than helping to bring peace and stability. With time, the US has been increasing its military export to regimes which are considered unstable like the Middle East and some parts of Africa. This has been against the pledge of President Bush of ending tyrannical in the world by fighting for the protection of democratic institutions and helping the world to come to peace with one another (Kriegers 2001, p. 121). The experience that US has had with Iran and Iraq has demonstrated that selling of arms to the strategic allies can sometimes backfire and work

Opinion and Voting Behavior in 2012 Elections Research Paper

Opinion and Voting Behavior in 2012 Elections - Research Paper Example The campaigns were competitive with the two spending over $1 billion in which much of the advertising was on television and was considered as negative. Instead of the campaign favoring the candidates it had some negative impact as Obama received four million fewer votes that the ones he garnered in 2008. However, he utilized the social media, which had a very big impact on the voters turnout. Romney was successive in the nomination process, and his campaigns focused on the dissatisfaction with the economic performance and other national problems. One of the national problems Romney used to influence people not to vote for Obama is the increased US debt and promised to improve the healthcare system. However, he could not explain how he would deal with spending deductions. The campaigns mainly concentrated on attacking each other rather than providing solutions for the economy. For instance, Obama team attacked Romney for opposing the Obamas initiative that had included abortion and co ntraception benefits under the health care plan branded as Obama care. Romney defeated Barrack Obama at the polls, and many believed that he might be the winner of the elections. He defeated most of his contenders during g the nominations and hoped to secure the presidential seat as well.

Special education students revenue, analysis that shows compartive Research Paper

Special education students revenue, analysis that shows compartive costs of educating those students inside the district as opposed to outside the district - Research Paper Example Since each special child has their own way of understanding, the school system tends to provide more learning hours for them. This caring includes adding to the budget of the school what is needed by the child therefore receiving provisions from the federal government. A child with the development disorder will need a tutor for most of their life in order to be self-dependent and the school has to provide. Although intellectual giftedness can benefit from a different program, the term special needs education refers to those that are underprivileged and this reduces their ability for learning. Special education has institutions, but it is also under integration in the education system in developed countries and each school has a program for special needs students. This modification tries to see that the most number of students, even with special needs, receive service from the general education environment for more inclusive learning activities. Some special cases, however, have to receive handling in special schools, which have specific programs for severe cases. Schools in Saddle Brook school district have approval from the New Jersey department of education. The following is a table showing the average enrollment of the school for the past five years ending with the fiscal year June 30 2012. Saddle brook district is financially well off with residential homes occupying most of it. The district is almost 95% developed which means further development is quite hard to implement. With such a huge residential population, it means that the district funds the schools via the local tax base. This means that for all developments in the district, the community is directly responsible and they determine how much the school has to upgrade the programs. The district has several schools despite its consideration as a small suburban district. It has three K-6 elementary schools; long, Smith and Franklin, the Washington school; houses the special

The impact of Apple company stocks on the economy Essay

The impact of Apple company stocks on the economy - Essay Example Paradoxically, the institutional investors of Apple had a stock value of $427 billion whereas those of Microsoft had the stock value of only $172 billion. Apple saw the peak value of its shares worth $702.10 on 19 September 2012, but its fall as of 16 November 2012 has been quite as remarkable, when the value of its shares dropped to $505.75. A senior research analyst, Brian Colello said, â€Å"It's just amazing because it's such a large company. The company lost about $35 billion in market cap in one day. That's the size of some large-cap stocks† (Colello cited in O’Brien, 2012). The senior index analyst, Howard Silverblatt, said, â€Å"The impact on shareholders and on the economy is incredible. We've not seen anything like this in the modern trading era. Ever† (Silverblatt cited in O’Brien, 2012). People tend to understand the behavior of Apple’s stock by considering the bits of bad news, the questions and controversies about Apple’s compe tition and its market share, that in reality, have little to do with the Apple shares. According to Steven Milunovich, a UBS analyst, the rate of manufacture of Apple iPhones would decline in the first quarter of the year 2013 (NBC News, 2012). Milunovich expects Apple to produce 2 million fewer iPads and 5 million fewer iPhones till September 2013, though he expects Apple to be able to sell up to 41 million iPhones in the first quarter of the year 2013, followed by 36 million in the second quarter and 33 million in the third quarter of 2013. In addition to that, Milunovich also expects sale of about 21.7 million iPads, 24.5 million iPads, and 20.7 million iPads in the first, second, and third quarter of the year 2013 respectively. Nevertheless, â€Å"The extraordinary volatility is the result of Apple's strength. People try to blame the volatility on Apple's weaknesses† (Schwarz cited in O’Brien, 2012). Since the establishment of Apple Inc. as a company, there have be en mixed effects on the economy. Apple has conventionally had tremendous effect on the economy. This is evident from the fact that the sales of iPhone added anywhere from 0.25 to 0.5 percentage point to the growth rate of the US economy (Rushe, 2012). While on one hand, consumers have contributed a lot to the economy by buying the supplies and the different electronic gadgets that Apple has made available to them, on the other hand, companies competing with Apple have faced a decrease in the values of their shares and so have their shareholders and investors since Apple has outdone them in the sale of products. Since Apple has contributed immensely to the economy in the recent years, the economy has started to increasingly depend and rely on Apple. Accordingly, with the downfall of the value of Apple’s shares, the economy goes down as well. However, the downfall of the value of Apple’s stock is not expected to sustain for too long and is expected to rise again as soon as Apple introduces another innovative product into the market. â€Å"Whether it is an iTV, wearable computers, or another new product category, we have faith that innovation is not dead† (Milonovich cited in NBC News, 2012). Concluding, despite the apparent decline in the value of its shares in the recent weeks, Apple still remains the most valuable company among all in the world. However, the investors are becoming increasingly cautious regarding the future of the company and its ability to introduce

Relationship(s) between leadership and management 311 Essay

Relationship(s) between leadership and management 311 - Essay Example On the other hand, with the rapid growth of the business sector and constant changes in the nature of markets, the theories, concepts and practices of leadership and management have also evolved (Baker and Desjardins, 2013). Relating to these changes, this essay focuses on analyzing the contribution and use of leadership and managerial concepts in ensuring sustainable business practices and growth. As stated by Brown, Trevià ±o and Harrison (2008), selection of the managerial process in a business is dependent upon the style of leadership being applied. On the other hand, Bogardus (2009) mentioned that the management practices of a firm define the leadership styles that can be implemented. Both of these notions can be analyzed in an in-depth manner by reflecting their characteristics and objectives of utilization. As highlighted by Morgan (2009), the key objective of management is to enhance that the aims of the organization can be fulfilled while leadership establishes the mission and vision that provides direction to a company. Supporting this notion, Kim and Brymer (2011) further added that as an organization is structured and the work culture is established, the style of leadership among the various operational variables of the business differ. In the business sector, this sort of alignment between leadership and management can be often observed. As an evidence for the above stated concept of alignment of leadership and management, the managerial process of Google Plc can be taken into consideration. The mission of Google is to help in spreading knowledge by innovating new platforms for sharing information all over the world (Day, Harrison and Halpin, 2012). Based on this mission, the managerial and leadership aspects of the company are developed. Lunenburg (2011) highlighted that Google being a technology firm depends on innovation and thus have created a participative managerial and leadership culture

Jennifer Lopez Essay Example for Free

Jennifer Lopez Essay Using the video clip, the magazine article and the newspaper article, analyse how a positive image of a celebrity is presented through the different media. You should compare and contrast the different ways they are presented. I have been given an assignment to discuss a magazine article, a newspaper article and a video clip. I have chosen to discuss Jennifer Lopez. I will be discussing the magazine article first followed by the newspaper article and finally by the video clip. First of all I am going to discuss the picture in the magazine article, the picture we are given is in black white, which, is slightly a disadvantage when talking and discussing articles. The picture of Jennifer Lopez in the magazine article is covering more than half the page; the picture of Jennifer Lopez has been taken from such an angle so the viewers can only see one side of her face. Pictures such as this, which are taken from the side, are very popular. Viewers say they rather have a picture from the side of a person rather than a straight picture from the front. The picture has been enhanced and edited to show the best bit of Jennifers body. I. e. her buttocks. The picture of Jennifers body has been edited such as extra shadow has been placed on the picture of her body to give the look of a healthy and fit looking skin with a golden look, the shadow and enhancement make the curves of her slim and smooth body more attractive which she keeps talking about and attract more viewers. The picture enhances the buttocks with the frilly underwear she is wearing, she wears this to make her buttocks looks smaller as she thinks it is too large, this is one of the reasons she is not wearing a thong although many admirers and fans think her buttocks is the most desired part of Jennifer Lopezs body. The text in the magazine article of Jennifer Lopez is a main part of the magazine as it tells us what we the viewers and readers want to hear and see. The text although compared to other articles may be placed somewhere near the top of the page, this text has been brought down next to her buttocks as when readers read the text, where it quotes straight from the text, derriere(backside), you wouldnt to search for it as it has been correctly positioned so you can look straight over as you read the text. Her name Jennifer Lopez has not been placed in Capital Letters although people think of her as a sex symbol. The magazine article NEW do not seem to mind publishing J-Los age as some people prefer that as a private matter, nevertheless she has the sign of being number 1 on the side of the text which shows that she is a very high ranking lady and a title at the top saying she is (in this magazine) the sexiest woman at this time. The first line of the text in the magazine article is a quotation, which is supposedly from Jennifer Lopez herself. She says, I have a very curvaceous body and I like to accentuate that. She then goes on to say, To me its a beautiful thing. Quotation from anybody in an article is a very persuasive technique to pull new readers to get the interested; the public is pulled in to think like her, which is part of the repetition technique. The quotation, tells us she shows of her body and her beauty to he public. Showing the body can be a good technique in getting large amounts of new readers to get the interested. Repetition is brought in to the text even though it is a short piece of text, the article repeats on how her body has those beautiful curves yet they also decide to talk about her career and some of her personal life. The article brings in a short sentence when they say she married a wrong person such as P DIDDY. What was she thinking, this was quoted when they gave a remark over P DIDDY her ex-husband. This remark makes the male readers think you should have come to me instead. A rhetorical question is used, What was she thinking, this is used when the remarked her ex-husband P-DIDDY, this sometimes make the public think twice before they judge the article and Jennifer Lopez. The magazine article although very short gives a positive impression towards Jennifer Lopez especially at the talk of her body. Remember the magazine article can never have as much impact as the video, this is because the video has motion clips and sound to go with pictures as in the newspaper and the magazine article it is only one picture which may have been enhanced to give it an effect. The newspaper article shows the picture of Jennifer Lopez and her groom to be Ben Affleck. The title is shown as Jennifer Lopez: The Story. It gives an impression of Jennifer as if it were from the beginning. The first few lines of the text are lyrics from her solo song Jenny from the block, where it says, Dont be fooled by the rocks that she has got, these few words dont be fooled by the rocks that shes got, gives us an impression that she is extremely wealthy, the point of bringing these lyrics up is to pull reader to read this newspaper saying that this person is a wealthy person and that she has everything a girl would need. The nest few words are, shes still Jenny from the block, these few words important as they tell us that when she was at a younger age she was poor, may be not that poor, but with the riches she has now the words say she is still the same person she was say 20 years ago. Although she says she is it may not seem so, this is slightly a negative impact to her image as the newspaper continues to say, But with a reported entourage of 20 staff apparently tending to her every whim, it seems hard to believe. Yes this is hard to believe; as she wouldnt have 20 people tending to her every need when she was younger and this tells us fame has affected her. The newspaper tells us Jennifer will be appearing on a T. V. show to find out whether fame has affected or changed her. This newspaper does not give a very good positive attitude towards Jennifer Lopez as the paper says she a Diva which is not a compliment for any star. The next paragraph gives a different perspective as they bring in Ben Affleck her fianci e for her forthcoming marriage. They write saying that her wedding is pronounced the wedding of the year as later she does not get married at all, but this paper is not a new one. Born in New Yorks tough Bronx district in 1970, Jen knew from an early age she wanted to be a superstar and she did become a superstar. The paper is about the life of Jennifer Lopez, you would think they would talk about her childhood first but they bring this subject up in the 4th paragraph, she was supposedly was born and brought up in the Bronx district, but this is false according to information over the internet I researched. Later we find out her parents wanted her to go to college and become a lawyer were she would have made more money than she is making now, which is enough anyway, but she might not have enjoyed it as much as becoming a singer, actress and a star. The paper also tells us her becoming famous was a sudden move from coming through a Janet Jackson song, US comedy and on a big screen with George Clooney in Out of Sight which brought her up to becoming a star. We see Jennifer wanted to be famous as she has got it all looks, career, singing voice and of course Ben. Her picture in the newspaper article does not seem to have been enhanced or edited by the looks of it as it shows herself and her fianci e, the picture has not much to edit, as it is clear enough for the public to know what is going on. Again the newspaper article cannot have a lot of force compared to the video clip, as neither the magazine article or the newspaper article have either motion clips or sound to go with the video. In the video of Jennifer Lopez we see and hear of her becoming famous from the Latina actress herself. While the program runs and shows of Jennifer Lopez in films or singing, the program has a continuous song in the background of her own. Each song they show on the program, they only show clips that the audience and viewers want to see, so they bring out the best bits of the song, while watching the video I noticed she changed her clothes a lot through each screen shot, this may have something to do when they only take the best part of herself when showing in her songs. I noticed she changed her clothes from top to bottom at a total of 8 times. An advantage for us when watching the program is you can hear what she says for real and cannot be made up by some newspaper or magazine article. There is also a lot of dialogue throughout the program as most of it occurs through the interview of Jennifer Lopez. The video shows a very positive image of Jennifer as the video itself is self-promoting a well. Also each screenshot in the songs have also been edited as extra light has been added to give that extra look of the sexy body she has. Jennifer is the centre of attention in this interview as almost every screenshot shows her, the program also shows a little girl trying to dance and sing, this is representing Jennifer when she was at a younger age dreaming of what she wanted to become. Jennifer quotes, I still feel the same exact way as I started, and this is same to her lyrics in the newspaper article as although she may say she feels the same, her dress sense and appearance ahs gone up a level since she became a star. During some of the songs I noticed she dressed mostly in white with a dark background such as a dark blue to bring Jennifer in to the centre of the spotlight, this is a very clever trick indeed not just a persuasive technique towards the public but it also brings her body looks in towards the spotlight. In one of her songs, if you had my love, we see in the video she is silhouetted which gives a kind of a sexual nature of her being and as she goes on to say would you comfort me, this is giving a sexual image to her character. The list of three is brought in the program when it says actor, dancer, singer, also to make a rhythm assonance is used with the word er also with a comment on voyeuristic quality. During the interview with Jennifer Lopez a lot of lighting has been added to show Jennifers beautiful golden, healthy, fit looking skin. Her skin is reflected back in to the camera so it gives the viewers what they wanted to see. I think given reading both the newspaper article and the magazine article and watching the Jennifer Lopez video I think the video would promote better to give a very positive image of herself and her body. I chose this because the magazine article has a very short amount of text with a large picture of Jennifer Lopez, the picture we were given was in black white which was a bit of a disadvantage which I have already said and also the quotes, which are used, may not be for real. I never chose the newspaper article because the paper talks about her life not from the beginning of her life but when she became a star and worked away from there and the picture being rather small with her fianci e beside her. The video is the only source of information, which would be easy for self-promotion and cannot be mistaken for her quote she used as you can take them straight from the dialogue of her interview. The video has music of Jennifers solo played continuously, which for some viewers is attracted to, and her appearance she had at the interview.

Supply and Demand Simulation Essay Example for Free

Supply and Demand Simulation Essay Supply and demand is the common sense principle which defines the generally observed relationship between demand, supply and prices: as demand increases the price goes up which attracts new suppliers who increase the supply bringing the price back to normal (Law of Supply and Demand, 2010). A surplus in the market exerts a downward pressure on price while a shortage in the market exerts an upward pressure on price. In the supply and demand simulation Goodlife has control of the apartment rental community is Atlantis. In the first year Goodlife wants to bring down the vacancy rate to about 15 percent while maximizing revenue. Goodlife must lower the cost of rent in order to lower the vacancy rate but they have to make sure they don’t lower it too much or they will decrease their revenue so they must find at what rental rate they will lower vacancy but no lose revenue. As the years go by several things affect the supply and demand of the Goodlife Company, population increase, individuals wanting long-term housing and a price ceiling. Shifts in supply and demand affect decision making by causing the company to look at how to get the greatest revenue with the changes. The supply and demand simulation went over several key points that were also part of our textbook reading such as total revenue and demand, individual and market demand, cross price elasticity and shifting supply and demand. Total revenue and demand is the ability for a company to tell whether the total revenue will go up or down when they raise or lower their prices (Colander, 2008). Individual and market demand refers to how individuals may stop buying a product due to a slight rise in cost, the market demand is influenced both by how many people drop out totally and by how much an existing consumer marginally changes his or her quantity demanded (Colander, 2008). Cross price elasticity of demand is when the price of a product goes up and it positively impacts the demand of another product. Shifting supply and demand is the ability of the company to shift supply to meet demand and maintain equilibrium. At Regence BlueCross BlueShield supply and demand affects the cost of premiums as well as the type of benefits available on plans. It is important in healthcare to figure out which benefits are sought after and what it will cost to cover those benefits, by slimming down on the benefits that are used less then they can provide benefits that individuals want at a lower cost than if they supply all benefits. One example of this is putting limitations of such benefits as chiropractic or physical therapy while increasing the benefits for preventive care. Price elasticity of demand affects the decision making of the consumer and of the organization by changing the amount of a product available as well as the price of the product. Consumers will switch products if they are unable to find the product easily or if the price is higher than a similar product. Organizations must continue to shift the supply and price of a product in order to stay competitive and still make revenue. In the simulation I learned how to maintain equilibrium with supply, demand and price while maintaining company revenue at the highest rate. Goodlife must keep changing the availability and price of the apartments in order to keep up with supply and demand and maintain revenue, one way they did this is by turning some of their apartments into condos this decreased the number of apartments available but brought in revenue in a different manner.

Gender Identity In the Fashion Industry

Gender Identity In the Fashion Industry Fashion is not what models exhibit in a magazine or a store window. It pervades every aspect of life. Fashion is mystifying, intimidating, irritating at time yet compulsive. It is an assertion or expression of identity. So long as identity is important, fashion will continue to be important. Fashion defines an individuals persona. Fashion designers define how people should dress up and how they look in different outfits. They continue to make contributions to cultural and social environment. In their zeal to create something unique, designers are always on the lookout for inspiration from history, cultural differences, themes, motifs and contemporary thoughts. But fashion cannot be moulded per the male or female outlook. It speaks independently of its creators. Role of designers need not be gender biased or biology biased. A detailed scrutiny into gender and sex shows one is biological and other societal. For instance, females, biologically are designed to give birth. Once they have given birth and performed the mammalian function, they can take up a role of hunter or a warrior. The terms hunter and nester refer to masculine and feminine. Masculine describes an approach that is abstract in nature, usually focused on a splendid thought, the way of a hunter. Contrary to this, feminine approach is considered to be orchestrating detailed decisions contributing to wider set of objectives, the way of a nester. Regardless of sex, fashion designers can be categorized into 3 groups- Hunter, Nester and nester- hunter designer. Hunter designers are those who have focused approach on one thing but to do that very efficiently. Designers in nester group have broad minded approach. They aspire to take steps in sequence contributing to a decision keeping i n mind long term objectives. It is striking to notice difference between male and female designs. There is a slight assumption that abstract skills are of higher value. Emphasis should be on both abstract and verbal reasoning, technical and aesthetics implying that Nester and hunter need to work hand in hand for best results. Many women have a masculine approach to a design and many men have a feminine approach to a design. Nester-hunter designers are a mix of both. It is important to understand these types of designer approaches as the best design teams have a combination of hunter and nester approach. It does make sense that a combination of abstract thought blended well with meticulous design and contractual management would lead to some of the best works getting designed. AT the drawing board one can work from a particular thought to a more general one. This can be done even vice versa. But the important thing is that one should have a clear precise perspective of the end design. Majority of the worlds fashion designing schools are run by women but have been organized by men. Fashion was not always a gendered occurrence. Until eighteenth century, both men and women decked themselves with elaborate dresses. Costume historians have elaborated that gender distinction in dress was not that prominent until nineteenth century. Men and women in elite class often emulated abundant show of rich velvets, fine silks, lace, decorative footwear, wigs, head embellishments and scented powders. Men in pink suits, gold and silver jewelry and embroidered shirts were considered very masculine, regardless of choice of color or ornaments worn. The more intricate the dress, the higher used to be the status of the wearer in the society. Fashion was not only a womens affair then. It became feminized since nineteenth century when gender representation became stronger than societal class. With the turn of century, not only fashion became more feminized, but male identity went through a distinct change with modernization. Early theorists related fashion to the social status of women. The affluent displayed their wealth by ornamenting their wives and daughters exuding an air of sophistication. The women also spent endless efforts and hours to be ladies. At the end of eighteenth century bourgeois male went through the great masculine renunciation, as a result of which men gave up wearing all the bright colors and jewelry leaving it to the womens domain. In post industrial societies, men were guided by occupational spheres. Their business and casual attire were starkly different. Also age segmentation has played a very prominent role in defining mens style. Amongst women, age segmentation is only for those who want to believe in it. Although the designer fashion tends to extend beyond the boundaries of masculinity, the gender fashion still exists between male and female fashion. To that extent, fashion may be assumed to be cultural, affecting consumers perception and experience of design. The impact of gender is very evident in the visual appearances in consumers mind. For instance, pink for the girl and blue for the boy goes the clichà © defining gender by color coding. In the designer world, industrial design is thought as male and textile design as female. Even design is rendered into gender stereotypes like feminine lace, dolls for girls, masculine leather, etc. As industriliazation took place, social stratas on clothing transformed in eterms of occupation. The social chasm between lower class, middle and upper class was huge during the industrial era. Clothes were almost unavailable for the poor but were in abundance for the rich- for whom changes in fashions were created. Members of other social classes were just expected to emulate the rich if they wished to appear fashionable. By late nineteenth century clothes had become cheaper and accessible to lower classes of society. Middle and upper class women spent substantial amount of their incomes on fashionable clothes. Mens social clothing became more and more simplified. Infact the concept of uniforms and dress codes gained importance to showcase the ranks in the bureaucratic organizations. In the twentieth century, clothes seem to have lost their economic relevance but not their symbolic relevance. This is because clothes are available in all price ranges to suit all pockets. Those with l imited resources can still emulate fashion by creating personal styles which are expression of their identities rather than imitating styles of the affluent. Appearance of fashion indicated sudden appearance of a new social bond and a social temporality With time, fashion trends have changed. It has been dominated by cult, uniqueness , inspiration from local and foreign models. Fashion instituted the social power of minute signs which has an astonishing mechanism of social distinction of those who dress in an innovative way. It also draws inspiration from ancestral heritage and social norms. Fashion perhaps forms a major part in the construction of a social identity. It is an indication of how people in different eras showcased their positions and status boundaries. The most visible marks of social status and gender has been broadly showcased by Fashion. Fashion dictates the choices that people make in the form of culture, norms and appropriateness of the occasion. For instance, hats were a huge fashion statement and were worn to either showcase recognised or desired social status. Fashion clothing also revealed the occupation, social class and regional origin of a person. It distinguishes elite fashion from everyday fashion. There is very less in common amongst dressing style of a secretary a homemaker, a businessman and a law enforcement officer. As a social phenomenon, it has been treated as futile because of huge association of outward appearance with women. The face of fashion defines its phenomena. Female fashion emanates uniqueness and change. Mens interest in fashion is dictated by their occupation generally but womens interest depends upon their fascination with beauty. Now the nature of fashion seems to have changed. From nineteenth century when fashion was more on well defined standard of societal appearance has now evolved into being more contemporary. It has become indistinct, multifaceted and highly fragmented. New styles have been evolved over the years. Societies have changed dramatically in the past few decades. Social class has become less prominent in the contemporary society of today. Instead of class differentiation there is fragmentation of cultures within societies. 1960s was a special era in the sense where fashion emerged in lower status groups and adopted by the affluent. This fashion phenomena defied age and social barriers conveying pride to the trendsetter. In early 90s, designers tried to be innovative by adding feminine elements to menswear. Also there seemed to be a female dominance over the culture. Fashion for women fits the definition of conflicted supremacy. Women have held contrasting position in different times ranging from marginally unconcealed to conservative to acceptable fashionable to feminine dominance and empowerment in 90s. Turrow believes lifestyles are now in hypersegmentation which isolates each lifestyle in its own niche. People are more likely to frequent changes in their lifestyle now. The mulitplicity of changes that such lifestyle in a contemporary society presents the opportunity to an indidual to break away from tradition.Todays individual constructs a send of identity from his past, present and future events, commitments and aspirations. The individual styles have also gone through frequent changes in line with their changing lifestyles. Personal orientation, income, education, family careers, social position influence a persons taste in fashion. The younger generation today, usually with more affluent background have post modernist attitude towards identity. Attitude of younger women towards fashion is that of liberalization, power and personal panache. Men are now borrowing elements of costumes from women. Problems are faced when there is persistence to keep male gender above the female one . Today men spend lot of time and money on hair styling, appearance, fashionable clothing and skin products. These men are being coined as metrosexual. A metrosexual man willingly displays his masculinity from his ability to consume, showcase his toned physique to assert his identity as an urban middle class man.Yet again, fashion is being used to exhibit gender identity. Fashions most imminent characteristic is that it changes. With multiple demands on clothing and dressing, change is the only constant. Cross-dressing has come up as a welcome antidote to confining concepts of society and gender. It offers alternative ways to visualize and dress up a gender and might end up freeing the consumers restrictive thoughts on gender dressing. Realm of fashion in undergoing a radical change. Fashion contributes to newer definitions of social identities and newer attributes to personal preferences. Today because of globalization, fashion houses have to constantly innovate, think out of the box as consumers are no longer fashion victims. Gender studies in design have now challenged these contentious gender, sterotypes, cultural and societal outlook. Female designers earlier have been more prevalent in ceramics, textile designs and men more prominent in abstract art and advertising designs. These self, societal and cultural divisions are breaking down now. Men and women both have critical roles to play as consumers and producers of design. People select styles to suit their identity, lifestyle and societal norms. Fashion is a choice not a compulsion. It is not a simple process to achieve equivalence between design and customer preference. Designers today are pushing gender based boundaries in fashion and almost pulverizing them. They are bringing to life their vision of what they consider fashion. Designers are now teaming up with people who have different perspectives to make an impact in all their designs. They take pride in and gain strength from the richness of a multicultural society and recognize it as a continuous growth . They work in an environment where they contribute their thoughts freely and create designs. These designs are sated with utmost creativity, uniqueness, abstractness and intricacy at the same time. This has become the definition of success.

Essay --

Introduction The Berlin Plus Agreement was signed on 16th December 2002 by Javier Solana, the European Union High Representative for the Common and Security Policy and George Robertson, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The main purpose is to enhance a bilateral cooperation on international security. The first mission held through the Berlin Plus agreement was promoted by the EU in Macedonia and Bosnia (2003). Named Concordia it provided concrete evidence of the importance of the Berlin Plus to be effective in order to safeguard Europe. After Concordia, a small but successful operation, the Berlin Plus Agreement was once again used for a military mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina. EUFOR Althea was launched on 2nd December 2004 and has been going on until nowadays. Nevertheless these were the only missions undertaken within the framework of the Berlin Plus Agreement. Europe Common Foreign Security Policy (CFDP) was created in response to the lack of means from the EU during the Balkan Wars in the early 1990's. The Berlin Plus Agreement is a treaty created to legitimize the use of NATO means and expertise by the EU. Nevertheless politics had a huge impact in the effectiveness of the Berlin Plus Agreement. Before the creation of CSDP in the St Malo Act in 1998 – held during the Washington Summit - political tensions between Turkey and Cyprus/ Greece which had been going on since 1981 reached a climax after Greece became part of the then European Community (EC). Restrictions arouse between the EU and Turkey, their relationship worsened. The tension resulted from the EU recognition of Cyprus independence, whereas Turkey refused to legitimize it. The outcomes of these tensions were to jeopardize t... ...hree months) and a mission that would mean dealing with a real threat to national security. Furthermore the question about France ends up being very central in the CSDP question since France is the state that most pressures the EU to take part in military missions. Would CSDP exist if France was not there to pilot missions? Many European officials take the Foreign Policy of the EU for granted. The EU has been successful in the three missions engaged independently from NATO. Furthermore the main distinctiveness of the EU is its civilian comprehensive approach. Therefore this should be the main engagement of the EU. Even though the EU needs to have some security and defence protection for its borders, it should bear in mind that NATO exists to protect and defend its Member States and nothing less. Therefore NATO should not be ignored by the EU when CSDP is engaged.

Understanding Haemophilia :: Health Medicine

Understanding Haemophilia In the human body, each cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, one of each pair inherited through the egg from the mother, and the other inherited through the sperm of the father. Of these chromosomes, those that determine sex are X and Y. Females have XX and males have XY. In addition to the information on sex, 'the X chromosomes carry determinants for a number of other features of the body including the levels of factor VIII and factor IX.'1 If the genetic information determining the factor VIII and IX level is defective, haemophilia results. When this happens, the protein factors needed for normal blood clotting are effected. In males, the single X chromosome that is effected cannot compensate for the lack, and hence will show the defect. In females, however, only one of the two chromosomes will be abnormal. (unless she is unlucky enough to inherit haemophilia from both sides of the family, which is rare.)2 The other chromosome is likely to be normal and she can therefore compensate for this defect. There are two types of haemophilia, haemophilia A and B. Haemophilia A is a hereditary disorder in which bleeding is due to deficiency of the coagulation factor VIII (VIII:C)3. In most of the cases, this coagulant protein is reduced but in a rare amount of cases, this protein is present by immunoassay but defective.4 Haemophilia A is the most common severe bleeding disorder and approximately 1 in 10,000 males is effected. The most common types of bleeding are into the joints and muscles. Haemophilia is severe if the factor VIII:C levels are less that 1 %, they are moderate if the levels are 1-5% and they are mild if they levels become 5+%.5 Those with mild haemophilia bleed only in response to major trauma or surgery. As for the patients with severe haemophilia, they can bleed in response to relatively mild trauma and will bleed spontaneously. In haemophiliacs, the levels of the factor VIII:C are reduced. If the plasma from a haemophiliac person mixes with that of a normal person, the Partial thromboplastin time (PTT) should become normal. Failure of the PTT to become normal is automatically diagnostic of the presence of a factor VIII inhibitor. The standard treatment of the haemophiliacs is primarily the infusion of factor VIII concentrates, now heat-treated to reduce the chances of transmission of AIDS.6 In the case of minor bleeding, the factor VIII:C levels should only be raised to 25% with one infusion.

VESTMENTS IN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH :: Essays Papers

VESTMENTS IN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH An important aspect of the Catholic Church is its vestments. The Church is always beautifully decorated and holy people beautifully dressed. These decorations have changed very much since the beginning of time. Although we don’t always realize it, there is much symbolism in the colors that priests, bishops, cardinals and even the Pope wears. There are also strict guidelines that these people must follow when dressing. This paper will tell of the history of this clothing. EARLY CHRISTIANS To study the history of the Church in the first century, we have to rely on the writings of the Early Christians, mainly the New Testament. At this time, Christians were waiting for the second coming of Christ, which they expected very soon. Since they thought that Christ would come again in their lifetime, they didn’t feel the need to really formalize their religion or create any clothing that was specifically Christian. In 64 in Rome, St. Peter and St. Paul were executed. Right after the executions of these men, Nero began to execute other Christians. At this time it would have been dangerous for Christians to wear distinctive clothing. As these persecutions began, people began to realize that the Church would outlast the lives of the men who had actually known Jesus Christ. After these persecutions ended, there was peace until 95 when Diocletian, a ruler, began taking action against the aristocratic Christians in Rome. In Asia at the same time there were persecutions of bot h Jews and Christians. After this, a few general Christians adopted a few general styles of clothing. First was the tunic, worn by St. Augustine. This came out of Rome and was an indoor garment. During worship, it was required that it was clean and white, which may be why Christians shied away from the traditional Roman wool tunic. Wool fades to yellow after time so Christians began wearing linen tunics because the more linen is washed, the whiter it becomes. It has been said that St. Peter wore a pallium with his tunic. It was wrapped around the body in a simple way. It was a plain garment, except that it had embroidery in each of it’s four corners. Apparently Jesus and His apostles had also worn palliums and so they became part of the ornamental dress of Christians. Christians also wore the paenula. It was a hooded garment and was worn by Christians in worship starting in the second century.

Jaded sullenness Essay

Louisa is described as â€Å"struggling through the dissatisfaction of her face, there was a light with nothing to rest upon, a fire with nothing to burn, a starved imagination keeping life in itself somehow† this shows that because she has not been sang nursery rhymes or told fairy tales etc. that she has been mentally affected and a part of her is dying, and crying out to be ‘fed. ‘ The theme of fire is quite common, she has been described as fire a few times so far, the dying embers of fire represent her dying hopes of happiness, and the fires of Coketown chimneys that are frequently hidden beneath smoke represent her inward passions, and her emotions which she hides beneath a passive fai ade. Louisa was brought up on her father’s â€Å"facts† scheme. She was taught nothing but facts because her father did not think she needed imagination or fancy. This has made her unable to express her emotions and ignorant of how to act in relationships, she seems almost dead inside and is described as having â€Å"Jaded sullenness. † Dickens also states that she â€Å"Would have been self- willed†¦ but for her upbringing† which I think is how Dickens generally tries to bring her across throughout the book and that her upbringing had a huge impact on her and affected her very strongly. When we are first introduced to Louisa she is peeking in at the circus, â€Å"what did he behold but his own metallurgical Louisa, peeping with all her might through a hole in the deal board. † this is symbolic and shows that she is longing to experience more than just facts and science that she has been brought up with. Her father believes in teaching children â€Å"Nothing but facts† because he figures that you will never need fancy or imagination in the real world. She instinctively seeks out fun and fancy whenever she can, Dickens brings her across as a model reason why her father’s â€Å"facts facts, facts! † idea is not a good one. After she is caught peeking into the circus her father repeats, â€Å"What would Mr Bounderby say?† this affects Louisa and makes you wonder who Mr Bounderby is. Mr Bounderby is a powerful citizen of Coketown, he is a greedy capitalist and his name is slang for ‘cad’ which is what he is. He is attracted to Louisa and wants to marry her. He repulses Louisa and when he kissed her she looked away and rubbed her cheek for 5 minutes, when her brother, Tom says â€Å"You’ll rub a hole in yo ur face† she says that if he cut it out with a penknife, she wouldn’t cry.
